How to Build a Dog House - Dog House Designs

The Benefits of Insulated Dog House Plans

Though wooden dog homes are popular among many families who own dogs regardless of its sizes, not many individuals are aware that there are a lot of varying types of wood obtainable for your dog house.

The commonest type of wood used is cedar. It is without a doubt one of the hottest choices for wood dog house plans due to its resistance to break down and decay, and in addition to pests and decay resistance.

Cedar is simple to work with and it is durable and dependable and could be worked on for long durations of time with none maintenance.

Other kinds of wooden materials which might be utilized in constructing cool dog houses include pine and hemlock although they’re much less popular. One purpose is because they lack the ability to decay resistance as compared to cedar wood. This reason is also why they are seldom used as the base structure of your canine home as they decay and decay faster especially after they come into contact with the ground.

How to Build a Dog House

In case you are constructing your personal dog house, watch out for using pressure-handled wood. It is because though they are proof against decay and insects, they include harmful chemicals that would pose a hazard to your dog.

Older pressure handled wooden uses chromated copper arsenate which might be deadly to pets and animals. Nonetheless, over the previous few years, other chemical substances have been utilized to create strain handled wooden and it’s safer.

Wooden is also more preferable than plastic materials in building dog homes because they stay a lot hotter through the winter. Wooden materials for construction also help to eliminate heat in a natural way during the summer season.

Wood can also be simpler to work with in comparison with plastic. You only want a saw and a hammer to construct your individual dog house. If you are eco-conscious, then building and constructing wooden dog houses can be extra environmentally pleasant and can easily be recycled for other purposes. It is also more affordable than plastic.

Therefore, it is not enough that you will listen to the countless hearsay of several persons who have encountered a major hindrance while finishing and building their insulated dog house plans. Aside from asking around people for advices and criticisms in building their own dog houses, you can also go directly to your local pet shops and stores, or even go online and check the official websites of those who specialize in building dog houses.

Custom TV Cabinet with Lift - My Lastest Furniture Building Project

When it comes to building furniture, the first thing you need is a blueprint for your project. It will save you a lot of time and frustration and you will enjoy your wood working project a whole heck of a lot more than if you didn't have any wood plans for your project.

On this furniture project, I disassembled the original TV Cabinet with the lifter inside because it was solid oak and weighed a ton! We were about to move and I just couldn't see moving such a huge cabinet. So after we moved, I built a new, smaller and lighter TV cabinet around the $2000 TV lift and put wheels on it for easy moving next time! All in all, a fun wood project.

Tips on Custom Built Boats

Almost all boats are constructed on a production basis, as this is the most efficient means of production. There's only one set of molds and many boats being built from the mold, reducing the cost of tooling per boat. Normally, there are a limited number of options to make assembly line production more efficient in terms of cost.

Leaving the ranks of production boats, there are several types of custom construction. There are many boats built with a limited budget, which is normally by amateurs. If you don't want to build the boat yourself, the next level available is what sailors call 'semi custom" boats.

These semi customs are normally built by small or mid sized shops out of one set of molds so the hull and decks could end up being identical. The builders will however, allow the owner to pick out the interior and other options.

The true custom built boat, or one of a kind boat, is specifically designed and built from scratch for a single customer with an unlimited budget. A true custom boat is a one on one project, and can get very expensive before you know it.

Before you decide to go out and buy a custom boat, you should give the used market another look. Those who have built custom or even semi custom boats in the past do put them on the market for sale at some point or another.

This is a much less expensive way to go, simply because you won't be paying a professional to design the boat from scratch. You can find used boats that offer one of kind features and options, all you have to do is look around.

However, if you would like to build your own custom boat, it's not as hard as you might think. Once again, it's all in the plans you use. The site below is an excellent place to start. You can watch a step by step video of just how easy it is to build a boat:

Must-Have Equipment Used In Wood Working

If you want to make any furniture in your house or you want to start your own wood products factory then wood working equipment is a must. Wood working equipment is used to mould a piece of wood into the desired shape. Some of the common wood working equipment include biscuit joiner, chainsaw, drill, nail gun and wood router. They are used to join 2 pieces of wood. Some of the hand held power tools are as follows:

Wood working machine: This machine is mainly used to process wood. These machines are extensively used in woodworking and are powered with the help of electric motors.

I do all of my woodworking projects with a Carvewright. I can't live without it.

Biscuit joiner: A biscuit joiner also referred as plate joiner is commonly used for joining 2 pieces of wood. It has a 100mm diameter circular saw blade that is used for cutting a semi-circular shaped hole in wood composite panels.

Chainsaw: This wood working tool is a portable, motorized, mechanical saw. It is very useful in logging activities that include felling, bucking and limbing. Felling of trees becomes a easier job using this chainsaw. It is commonly used in removing branches and foliage that are causing obstruction. Chainsaws are often used to harvest firewood and to fell snags. So if you want to cut wood for building structures then you should use chainsaws.

Drill: If you want to make holes in wooden pieces then you can take the help of a driller. Drillers are frequently used in metal working, wood working and construction sites. Types of drill include cordless drills, and rotary hammer drills.

Jigsaw: It is a working tool that is extremely useful to cut arbitrary curves that include stenciled designs into a small piece of wood. Tool kit of most carpenters contains a jigsaw. If you require fine cutting then you must use a jigsaw.

Nail gun: If you want to insert nails into wood then the best way to do it is by using a nail gun. The nails are driven by electromagnetism, highly flammable gases that include propane or butane, and by compressed air. Previously hammers were used to insert nails into wood. By using hammers you may injure your fingers. That is why instead of hammers many carpenters are using nail guns. It has become a popular tool amongst carpenters and builders

Wood Router: It is used to hollow out (route out) an area from a large piece of wood. This working tool is now replaced by modern spindle tool. This is an electric hand router that performs the same job and is commonly used for moulding of timber. It is also used to cut grooves, for edge moulding and to cut some joints.

Sander: It is a powerful working tool that is used to give a smooth finish to the wood. These sanders are often powered by electric motors.

Rotary tool: This tool is extremely useful as it is a multipurpose power tool. It has many rotating accessory bits that can be effectively used to cut, carve, polish etc. Rotary tool has low torque; hence it is safe for freehand use.

All these wood working equipment will help in giving an attractive look to your furniture.

How to Plan and Build the Perfect Greenhouse

Tips On Planning And Building Your Home Greenhouse

Building a greenhouse is like building a house. You should have a well-designed plan and several things need to be taken into consideration. There are different types of home greenhouses but your choice should depend on the growing area, architecture, location and costs. Most importantly, the greenhouse that you will be building should, of course, serve its purpose of maintaining a proper environment for plants to grow.

As mentioned, there are several things that need to be considered when putting up a greenhouse. To give you some tips, here are the things to be included in the planning stage:

- Location. First thing to note in building a greenhouse is its location. The best location for a greenhouse is a place where it will get maximum sunlight. Morning sunlight is best for plants because it makes them start processing early which will result to maximized growth.

Thus, the best location is on the east side where it gets maximum morning sunlight especially from November to February. North of buildings or any major structure is the last location to be considered as it only provides little light. Also, it is best to make sure that the trees nearby the chosen location will still allow enough sunlight to reach the greenhouse.

Other things to be considered when choosing location are good drainage, location of sources of water, electricity and heat. The location should also be convenient for the owner or the caretaker as well as to the utilities.

- Greenhouse type. In general, a home greenhouse can be any of these two types – a free-standing structure or one that is attached to your house or garage. Attached greenhouses also have different kinds. One example of an attached greenhouse is the lean-to. This is a half greenhouse attached directly to one side of a house or building with doorway, if possible. This type is close to sources of heat, water and electricity and is the least expensive. However, this kind of structure also has some limitations on space, ventilation, and sunlight.

Another attached greenhouse variation is the even-span. This kind of structure has one gable end connected to a building. It provides more usable space and allows for better air flow to maintain temperature. It is also the most costly, though, among the attached ones.

The third type of an attached greenhouse is the window-mounted. This type can be attached on the east or south side of the house or building. This is a glass enclosure that extends a foot or so, which gives enough space for growing a few plants at low cost.

Freestanding greenhouses are separate structures that are not limited to a small space. Since it is set apart from an existing structure or building, it should have its own water and electricity sources as well as heating system.

When choosing the preferred structure, make sure that enough space for benches, storage, as well as future expansion is considered. The University of Maryland Cooperative Extension Service suggests a minimum area of 6 feet by 12 feet for a free-standing or even-span greenhouse.

- Structural Materials. Your greenhouse should also have a good structural foundation to withstand extreme weather conditions. There are several options for a frame and framing materials to choose from. Do-it-yourself greenhouse plans commonly use wood or metal pipes as their structural material. There are different kinds of frames available which range from simple to complex designs. Some examples of frames are Quonset, gothic, rigid-frame, post and rafter, and A-frame.

Another material to be considered is the covering for your greenhouse. Your choice of frame and covering should correctly match. Some factors to be considered to choose a good covering is its ability to trap the most amount of heat inside, as well as its life span. The different choices for greenhouse covering include regular glass, fiberglass, double-wall plastic, and film plastic.

- Foundations and flooring. Glass frames and the double-wall plastic need a permanent foundation and the plan should be provided by the manufacturers of the frame. It is also recommended for the greenhouse to be elevated a little to have enough space for water to flow. Thus, permanent flooring is not advisable as the soil may stay wet and make the floor slippery. A walkway made of gravel, concrete or stone is advised for easy access to the all the plants.

- Environmental systems. Once you now have a good plan for the structure of your home greenhouse, the next thing to consider is its proper maintenance. Aside from sunlight and heat, different elements are important to maintain the ideal growing condition for plants. These environmental systems that should be included in greenhouse planning are heating, air circulation, ventilation, cooling, controllers and automation, water and lighting systems.

Building a greenhouse can prove to be demanding and challenging. Complete knowledge about greenhouse is needed for you to be able to build a productive structure. A considerable amount of time is needed to make a good plan which should cover all aspects. It pays to learn and scout for different options before making your final decision.

Basic Kitchen Plans

Your Basic Kitchen Plans

The efficient u-shape plan is versatile and usually puts one's workstation on each of three walls. The pros of this are great storage and counter space on three sides that maximize efficiency but this is not the best plans for entertaining or for accommodating multiple cooks. Major traffic jams in the kitchen! Another thing to consider is you have to have the basic 8x8 foot space and anything less won't provide the minimum 4 feet work space that is recommended for the center of the room. In a large kitchen for maximum efficiency, locate one workstation in a freestanding island.

The L-shape plan allows two workstations on one wall and the third on an adjacent wall. This layout is much more efficient concerning space than the U-shape plan especially if the main workstations are located close to the bend of the L. The L-shaped plan is not well suited for small kitchen spaces and you need to allow enough open counter space between the two workstations that share the same wall. This is at least four feet. Other things to consider is the arrangement of the workstations which are critical. The work needs to flow from the refrigerator to the sink and then to the stove cooktop and serving area. An ideal eating nook is the area opposite the bend of the L.

The island plan is a popular design because it features a freestanding workstation usually including the sink or stovetop. This is a wonderful plan for large kitchens where the work triangle exceeds the twenty-six foot rule that dictates that for maximum efficiency. Island plans are not well suited in kitchens where two work stations must be on opposite walls. The island is a convenient location for specialty countertops such as butcher block for chopping veggies or marble for rolling out those delectable desserts. Another idea is a rolling island which can roll outside to your patio or deck when entertaining guest.

When one end of the island is anchored to a wall or line of cabinets, this is called a peninsula plan. The peninsula kitchen packs all the versatility of island but does not require as much space. Like islands, the peninsula plan gives the cook a workstation and a view into another room rather than just toward a wall. After meal preparation, a peninsula can double as a serving buffet or bar.

The one wall plan is normally seen in smaller homes, vacation homes and apartments. This floor plan is definitely the most space saving but is least efficient for the cook. Normally there is a door at each end which translates into lots of through traffic. This can create quite a few problems as well as frustration for the cook. One wall kitchens work better when the sink is in the center beside the refrigerator and the stovetop. If you have the space, allow four feet of counter space on each side of the sink.

Tools You Will Need To Build A Wooden Train

Toy trains have almost become as much a symbol of Christmas time as reindeer, snowflakes, and hot chocolate. Almost every Christmas movie ever made features the heartwarming shot of a beutifully decorated Christmas tree with an enourmous pile of presents piled under it, and a toy train circling the perimeter.

Another gift that people love to give and recieve are the homemade variety. In some households these handmade presents become wooden heirlooms that are handed down from one generation to the next.

Designing and making a wooden toy train is a wonderful way to combine two traditions.

Your going to have to decide what kind of assembly process your going to use for your wooden train project.

A dowel assembly system is the process of using wooden nails and non-toxic glue to hold the peices of wood together. The upside to a using a dowel assembly is that it maintains the purity of the wood. The downside to the system is that regular wear and tear along with changes in weather cause wood to shrink and you will have to periodically have to reglue the wooden train.

Many inexperinced woodworkers opt to use nails to hold the peices of wood together. Although experinced woodworkers frown on this method there is nothing wrong with using nails provided you make sure that there aren't any sharp edges.

Screws are a secure way to fasten the peices of wood together. If this is the method you prefer make sure that the wooden train is periodically examined to make sure that none of the screws have worked thier way loose.

The use of a good strong glue is especally secure. It is also a safe way to create a toy that you are planning to give to a young child. Check the toy from time to time to make sure that the glue is staying stuck. When handleing strong woodworking glue be sure to take precautions, you don't want to have your hand permenatly stuck to a wooden train.

What type of wood you are going to use? Hardwood or softwood? The first thing you should know is that just because they are called hardwood and softwood does not mean that the wood you will be using is hard or soft, all the terns do is clarify wether or not they are from coniferous or desidous trees Softwood is descious, it comes from Pine trees. Hardwood is coniferous it comes from trees that shed thier leaves everyfall. You should avoid using Ceder, unless it is really well maintained it can splinter. If you are giving the toy to a young child (one who sticks everything in their mouth) avoid the use of Oak, which is toxic when ingested. If you are considering an exotic hardwood check and make sure it isn't a toxic wood. The wood you are using should be planed into peices of wood that wont break easily, the thicker the wood the less likly it will be to break in the middle of your project. Bear in mind, not all types of wood absorb stains. When you are staining the wood make sure you are using a non-toxic stain that is childsafe.

Find a set of instructions that are easy to follow. Keep them in a safe place where they wont get lost and adhere to them.

Leave yourself plenty of time. Building a wooden train could be a much larger, and more difficult project then you anticipate.

Once you become adept at making wooden trains, you may want to try your hand at creating miniture wooden structues for classic toy train layouts, and garden railroads.

Tips for Building Childrens Furntiture

Screws driven into the end grain of ply-wood should be long enough to take a 3/4-inch bite into the wood. Longer screws will not add materially to the strength of the joint and may split the wood.

Screws driven into core stock or solid wood should take a 1-inch bite—but to prevent splitting, a pilot hole, half the diameter of the screw, should be drilled first in the solid wood.

Screws driven into exposed surfaces of the project should be concealed with long-grain wood plugs as shown in the photos. These plugs are cut as needed from the sides of scrap wood with a special 1/2-inch plug cutter. They differ from dowels in that their ends have the grain pattern running across the surface, while dowels have an end grain.

The advantages of long-grain plugs are many. They can be cut from wood that matches in color and grain pattern the surface being plugged, and when properly matched and fitted they be-come almost invisible in the finished piece. Plugs take stain finishes in the same shade as the surrounding wood, while dowels, with their end grains, soak up the stain and appear considerably darker than the surrounding wood.

Dowels used as plugs may in time distort due to their failure to shrink and expand in the same direction as the wood which holds them. Plugs, however, will expand and contract in the same way as the wood. Finally, if for any reason a plug must be removed later, it can be chipped out easily with a 1/4-inch chisel, while the only way a dowel can be removed is to drill it out.

All About Power Saws for the Woodworker

Power saws are used for small and large projects. Some of them are light weight and other projects involve heavy objects. Power saws are available in a variety of sizes and different volumes of power to ensure you can always find the right power saw for any need you have. The newer power saws often come with an infrared light that you follow as you cut. This is a perfect way to ensure your cuts are as straight as possible.

The most common type of power saw is the chainsaw, used to cut down timber. They work well if you need to trim your trees or cut them down for firewood. On draw back of chainsaws is that the cut is often ragged so there is a great deal of splintering.

Circular saws are used for a variety of home improvement projects. They are very versatile, so it is a great choice if you don't want to have to purchase several saws that you only use occasionally. Circular saws are powerful enough to cut through very thick wood. Make sure you choose one that has a high level of power and comes with the on/off location in an easy to reach location in the event you need to turn it off in a hurry.

A mitre saw is a type of circular saw that works well for crosscutting. It is used to cut at exact angles, dimensions, and lengths. For very detailed work, a scroll saw works great. These are both very common tools used in woodworking.

A saber saw works well to cut paneling and other thin, flexible materials. It is commonly referred to as a jigsaw. You want one that is sturdy and fits well in your hand. The quality of the saber saw isn't that important, but the quality of the blades you use in one is a very important issue that will impact your cuts.

A table saw is used for bigger jobs or long pieces of material. It consists of a table with the saw blade located in the center of the table. This is a great way to have a surface to hold the other end of the material.

A band saw is the best option when you need to cut something in the middle or away from the edge of a piece of material. The band saw has a small table with a very thin blade that comes down from the top. Clamp your material in place to line up with the bland and pull the top part of the band saw down. This is great for cutting out wall plugs and door knobs.

There are several very small power saws as well. The crosscut saw is used when it is necessary to cut across the grain. A rip saw operates similar to a circular saw but it is smaller. A keyhole saw is used to make curved cuts or to put round holes in paneling and dry wall.

Most saws are long lasting and durable. It is very important that you store them where the blade won't be a safety hazard. Make sure you unplug them after every use if you don't have a cordless saw. Since the last so long, it is important that you protect the blade. They can become rusty if you don't clean them after use. Never operate a saw with a rusty or bend blade. It is a potential safety hazard.

Saws are very powerful tools. You should always were safety glasses while operating any type of saw. You also need to use any guards that come with the saw for your own protection. Make sure you fully understand how to operate the particular saw you are using. Take some time to investigate the right saw to use for your particular project. Some saws are very versatile and can be used for many different things.
